AR, VR, or Neither: A Decision Framework, Not a Hype Cycle
Ask ten founders whether they need AR or VR and you'll get ten confident, contradictory answers. Almost none of them started with the right question.
The right question isn't "which immersive technology is trending." It's "where, specifically, are people losing confidence in what we're asking them to do." That question picks the technology for you. Most of the time it also tells you that you don't need either one yet.
What Each Technology Is Actually Good At
AR, VR, and MR aren't interchangeable flavors of the same thing. Each one solves a different kind of problem, and picking the wrong one is how six-figure builds end up unused six months later.
AR fits retail, marketing, and accessibility, where the person stays in their own environment. Think "see it in my room" or a scan-to-learn product label.
VR fits training, healthcare, and complex visualization, where full immersion is the point. You want the person to forget they're in a headset.
MR fits industrial work, remote expert support, and design review, where digital objects need to anchor to and interact with the physical world in real time.
Spatial computing fits enterprise platforms that need more than one of these modes working together, not a single app.
If you can't say which of those four your use case matches, you're not ready to pick a technology. You're ready to define the problem.
Ignore the Stats You Can't Trace
Search "how many Fortune 500 companies use VR" and you'll find the same claim, often the exact same sentence, copy-pasted across dozens of sites with no named study, no sample size, and no methodology behind it. That's not a statistic. It's a rumor with a percentage sign attached.
We'd rather tell you we couldn't verify a number than hand you one that sounds precise and isn't. The honest version: enterprise interest in AR and VR is real and growing, actual production deployment (as opposed to a pilot that ran once and got shelved) is still the minority case, and the gap between "we tried it" and "we run this daily" is where most of the wasted budget in this category lives.
Test Small Before You Build Big
The businesses getting this right don't start with the flashiest possible build. They start where confidence actually breaks down in a real buying or working process, run one targeted test, and only expand once that test shows a measurable difference.
That looks like:
Naming the exact moment a customer or employee hesitates or gets it wrong today
Building the smallest version of an AR or VR experience that addresses that one moment
Measuring one thing: did the hesitation or error rate actually change
Scaling only after that number moves, not after the demo gets applause in a meeting
This is slower than committing to a full build up front. It's also the difference between an immersive tech budget that compounds and one that gets quietly written off next fiscal year.
What Doesn't Change
Headsets are still a real barrier. VR asks someone to put on hardware, which is a bigger ask than tapping a phone screen, and that friction is a legitimate reason plenty of use cases are better served by browser-based AR than by a full VR build, even when VR would technically work better. Ignoring that trade-off to chase the more impressive-looking technology is one of the most common and most avoidable mistakes we see.
Quick Answers, If You're Short on Time
Want customers to visualize a product in their own space? AR, browser-based if possible.
Training people for a high-stakes or hard-to-replicate scenario? VR.
Need digital data anchored to a physical object or space, in real time? MR.
Building a platform that spans more than one of these? Spatial computing, and budget accordingly.
Not sure which one you need? You probably need to define the problem first, not the technology.
Start With the Problem, Not the Headset
If you're weighing an AR or VR investment, start by writing down the exact moment where confidence or accuracy breaks down today. Bring that to the conversation instead of a vendor's demo reel.
